About Dr Joel Giblett

I am a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, Clinical Lead for Interventional Cardiology and Catheter Laboratory Director at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital. I am also an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Liverpool.

My clinical practice focuses on coronary artery disease, complex coronary intervention, difficult-to-treat angina, microvascular angina and resistant hypertension. I also assess patients with a wider range of cardiology symptoms.

My approach

My aim is to help patients understand the cause of their symptoms and identify appropriate treatment options, particularly where chest pain or high blood pressure has remained difficult to control.

Education & training

I completed my cardiology training in the East of England, including specialist training at Addenbrooke’s Hospital and Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge. During this time I undertook a research fellowship at the University of Cambridge and was awarded an MD in 2017.

I subsequently completed advanced training in coronary and structural intervention at Royal Papworth Hospital and was awarded the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society International Fellowship. This took me to the Royal Jubilee Hospital in British Columbia, Canada, for further specialist training.

I returned to the UK during the COVID-19 pandemic to work as a consultant at Royal Papworth Hospital, before taking up my substantive consultant post at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital in August 2020.

Research & education

Alongside clinical practice, I am actively involved in cardiovascular research and medical education. My research interests include coronary physiology, refractory angina, resistant hypertension and complications following myocardial infarction.

Outside medicine

Outside medicine, most of my time is spent with my wife and two daughters. I enjoy running, skiing and snowboarding, and being outdoors with my family, particularly walking and kayaking. I have also been a lifelong Arsenal supporter.
