Dr Joel Giblett

Interventional Cardiologist

BM BSc MD FRCP(UK)

I’m an Interventional Cardiologist at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital specialising in coronary and structural intervention, and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Liverpool.

I grew up on the south coast of the United Kingdom, in the beautiful seaside town of Bournemouth, Dorset. Whilst I still consider my heart to be there, I have since lived in a number of places around the UK. I have also spent a year working in British Columbia, Canada on a BCIS International Fellowship.

I am married with two beautiful and independent daughters. I spend too much time thinking about sport in general, and the travails of Arsenal Football Club in particular.

Headshot 1

Current Practice Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital

I am a consultant cardiologist at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, UK, having undertaken cardiology training at Royal Papworth Hospital, Cambridge and additional training in advanced coronary and structural intervention at the Royal Jubilee Hospital, in British Columbia, Canada. This included further training in:

  • advanced imaging techniques such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) and intravascular ultrasound (IVUS)
  • rotational atherectomy (rotablation) and laser atherectomy
  • treatment of complex coronary disease including multi vessel disease and left main stem disease

At Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital I see general cardiology patients in my clinic, including referrals for chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations and collapse.

I have a special interest in refractory angina – this means angina pain that is proving difficult to control with medicines, stents or bypass surgery. I undertake microcirculatory assessments, as well as deploying Coronary Sinus Reducer devices – a newer technique to treat angina. I have also recently begun treating resistant high blood pressure through a new technique called renal denervation. This has been shown to reduce blood pressure in patients where medications haven’t helped.

I see patients privately through the Rowan Suite at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital and patients interested in review should contact the Rowan Suite directly on 0151 600 1382 or via the website: https://www.therowansuite.co.uk/

Education and Training

I was educated at Bournemouth School, Dorset and then attended medical school at the University of Southampton, where I graduated with a BM in Medicine and a BSc in Biomedical Science with first class honours.

Following graduation I undertook Foundation Programme and Core Medical Training in Wessex deanery, in Poole and Royal Bournemouth Hospitals. I moved to East of England for general cardiology training in Ipswich and Addenbrooke’s Hospital, before taking a period out of programme for research.

I undertook a research fellowship in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Cambridge, with the research primarily carried out at Royal Papworth Hospital under the supervision of Dr. Stephen Hoole and Dr, David Dutka. In 2017 I was awarded a Doctor of Medicine (MD). I subsequently returned to undertake interventional cardiology training at Royal Papworth Hospital, undertaking all aspects of modern coronary and structural intervention. I was awarded the BCIS International Fellowship from which I returned early in order to work at Royal Papworth Hospital as a locum consultant during the COVID crisis.

In August 2020 I took up a substantive consultant position at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital.

Clinical Research

I’ve undertaken a variety of research during cardiology training and whilst undertaking a doctoral research fellowship at the University of Cambridge. My research interests include

  • treatment of myocardial ischaemia-reperfusion injury, particularly by accessing pathways related to the metabolic hormone, Glucagon-like Peptide 1 (GLP-1)
  • bioresorbable vascular scaffolds
  • structural interventions such as paravalvular leak closure, and post infarction VSD closure

I was fortunate enough to recently publish the UK experience of post infarction VSD closure over the pat decade and this was presented on the main stage at the prestigious TCT meeting in Boston in 2022. I have completed the 2022-23 NIHR North West Coast Research Scholar Programme.

I have been involved in a large number of investigator initiated and commercial clinical trials. During my doctorate I ran the GOLD-PCI trial, with the support of the Royal Papworth Hospital R&D department and my supervisor, Dr. Stephen Hoole. This was a randomised, double blind controlled trial of GLP-1 vs. placebo during percutaneous coronary intervention. I undertook all aspects of trial design and conduct, from conception to publication. The trial was published in the American Heart Journal, and presented at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions 2017.

In addition, I currently serve as an Editorial Consultant for JACC: Case Reports, and am a reviewer for a number of peer reviewed publications. I have co-authored a chapter on Cardiovascular measurement in Clinical Engineering, Second Edition.

My recent and important publications are displayed here.

Personal

Outside interventional cardiology, which doesn’t allow all that much free time, I have a range of personal interests. I’m am a sports junkie and can spend hours watch, and reading about all kinds of professional sports. I am a lifelong Gooner (Arsenal fan) and can spend hours talking about the deficiencies of our defence, or the absence of a midfield leader over the past decade.

In the winter I particularly enjoy snowboarding and skiing, and have had the opportunity to travel to locations across Europe and North America. Particularly special were trips to the Trois Vallees in France (my first holiday with my wife Amy) and to Breckenridge and Vail in Colorado.

In the summer our family enjoy walking and kayaking. Life in BC has afforded lots of opportunities for these adventures, and as our girls grow up we hope to continue with these.

In 2008 I had the opportunity to travel on an expedition to climb Kilimanjaro, at 5895 metres the tallest mountain in Africa, and the tallest freestanding mountain (height from base to summit) in the world. This was a brilliant adventure, with good friends, and remains a highlight of my time since qualifying as a doctor.
